Guidelines for Media

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)

The FBI is responsible for investigating and responding to incidents that occur on an grounded aircraft. The FAA has jurisdiction once the flight is in the air.

National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)

The NTSB is an independent federal agency charged by Congress with investigating every civil aviation accident in the U.S. and significant accidents in other modes of transportation-railroad, highway, marine and pipeline. 

When an aircraft accident occurs, the NTSB takes custody of the aircraft once fire and rescue operations are concluded.
